Sweater Pumpkins Tutorial

If you are new to the paint series this is day 14 of 31 days of the Power of Paint. If you'd like to see the entire series click  HERE. Today I am taking a break from painting and sharing a little Fall Decor Craft.

Sweet Sweater Pumpkins
Last fall, my sister purchased a bunch of these sweet little sweater pumpkins at a Vintage Market. Their prices ranged from $10 to $20. The DIYer in me refused to buy one, thinking I can make that!

To make these, you will need an old sweater that you don't mind cutting up. I found these 2 orange ones at Goodwill on dollar clothing day. You will also need: fiberfill stuffing, sewing needle and thread, scissors, hot glue, embroidery floss and fake leaves.

I started by cutting the sleeve off the sweater.

After I cut a straighter line... I sewed the bottom shut by hand. I did a straight stitch then pulled it tight to gather it.

I then had Sophie stuff it with fiberfill polyester stuffing. {She's 5 and always wanting to help.} She stuffed them FULL and I hand sewed the tops shut. Then I ran a string of embroidery floss from the top through to the bottom (using a really long needle) to create the lines in the pumpkin's body. I did this 5 times on each pumpkin and tied it off at the bottom.

As you can see, I was not very precise or picky about my stitches. They really don't show.

Sophie and I went out for a walk in the rain and gathered sticks to use as the pumpkin steams. We ended up cutting these from my lilac trees. I hot glued them in place.

I borrowed these silk leaves from some fake flowers that I have a stash of and hot glued them in place.

Ta Da! Sweet sweater pumpkins. The color possiblilies are endless with this, I can picture them in white and green...

I have changed up my Fall Mantel again. I added Halloween decor to it. I made the BOO Bunting using letters from the Graphics Fairy. Total cost for 4 pumpkins was about $2 and I still have the body of the sweaters to make something with... but that's for another day.
