Tutorial: Chippy Old Frame Gets A New Sign

Chippy Old Frame Gets A New Sign

My Dad built this frame out of old scrap molding he found. I have had it hanging on my craft room wall for years. It was all ready painted this chippy blue. Something I wish I could duplicate. I think that's why it's been hanging around unused for so long. Inspiration.

Joe cut a piece of 1/4 plywood to fit the frame for me to paint on and for a while I thought I'd just make it a chalkboard. But I do NOT need another chalkboard. See my collection HERE. So I painted it blue to match the frame. But it just didn't feel right or look right.

So I got out my stipple/stencil brush and stippled random black and pearl white acrylic craft paint over the blue.

I gathered a bunch of various sized of vinyl lettering.

Using painters tape as a guide line, I applied the vinyl lettering. I ran out of lower case letters in the tiny lettering so I had to start over with all upper case. The O I end up using in YOUR is actually a zero. It would be good to plan ahead... but I didn't I improvised. It worked.

After I applied and pulled up and reapplied the vinyl lettering {Tiny letters are so hard to handle!}I did a top coat of white acrylic just dragging a foam brush over it from top to bottom so that it was streaked.

Once the paint dried I pulled up the vinyl letters. The large ones came off easy, those little ones gave me some trouble. I used a straight pin from my sewing kit to pry up an edge enough to get my fingernail under. Acrylic paint scratches easy so do this carefully.

These did not come out entirely perfect, but I was going for rustic. You can see a little of the blue in the letters. It gives the lettering an old weathered look that I love.

Some paint got under the lettering so I used my straight pin to scratch it off. I was not too picky with this but it does work if you want it to be more precise.

Here is the finished. This is a song lyric from a band we saw singing on the landing in Seattle at Pike Street Market. My daughters insisted we purchase their CD. It was $5 and truly worth it. We listened to it the entire way home and still do almost daily. They are wonderful at harmonizing, just a bunch of 20 something kids belting their hearts out their band's name is Morrison Boomer. I hope that is a name people will recognize some day.

This was a fun sign to make. And it makes my Dad's frame really come to life. I think I will hang it in the bedroom seems like a bedroom type of sign.
