Stenciled Chairs Get Striped Seat

If you are new to the paint series this is day 20 of 31 days of the Power of Paint. If you'd like to see the entire series click  HERE.

Stenciled Chairs Get Striped Seat
You remember my Random Numbered Stenciled Chairs, right? They were so much fun to do but after the stencils, the seats seemed to be lacking in flair.

I gathered the necessary supplies: Acrylic paint, painters tape, tape measure, straight pins and stencil brush.

I started with a tape measure to determine where I wanted to place the stripe. I figured the opposite side of the numbers would look best to give a little balance to the chairs.

I took 2 straight pins and poked them in 2 inches apart and used these as a guide for my painters tape.

This drove Joe nuts, he was over my shoulder watching as I did the second one. He expected me to measure the top as well but since the top of the seat is smaller in width than the bottom and I didn't think I needed to do that much math, I just taped it as straight as possible. I worked. I told him, "This is not rocket science, it's art."

What would I do without painters tape? I think I could do another series just involving the use of painters tape. I used a stencil brush in a swirling motion to make sure the fabric was coated evenly. I painted right over the tape. Fabric does not cover as well as wood, it took quite a bit of paint. I did not use any water.

This is my favorite part, when you remove the tape and get these lovely straight lines. The paint isn't perfect. It isn't solid but like I said before, this is art. Have fun with it!

Aren't they cute? I love them and so does Samantha. She can't wait for her first apartment and I can't wait to decorate it with her. {I'll be blogging it, of course!}

Two down, two to go. Wait until you see the table I got to go with these. It's getting a paint job too, stay tuned.

If you are interested in a more detailed upholstery project, you should check out my friend, Linda's blog at http://www.mycraftyhomelive.blogspot.com/, she is doing a 31 day series on upholstery. It's incredibly informative. Have you seen all the other 31 Days participants {go HERE}, there are over 700 topics to chose from.

10/25/11 Update: Before you try this, see my tutorial on Textile Medium HERE. I highly suggest adding it to your acrylic paint to give it a smoother, more durable finish.
