February is Typewriter Appreciation Month Here At Nana Moon

I found this little typewriter at an estate sale for only $10! I positively LOVE it! The platen on this typewriter folds down over the keys to fit neatly in it's little black case. It was considered a portable and is really light weight. I call it my "laptop" typewriter because back-in-the-day this was a laptop. She is lovingly perched on the top shelf of one of my new bookcases, along with some other favorite items: 3 candles from my wedding that remind me of my 3 wonderful sisters and a little plaque that my Besty Erica got me for my 40th birthday.
The typewriter ribbon on this little "laptop" was shot so I removed it and I typed up a lovely sentiment on my computer and rolled on to the platen to appear as if it is still in use. (I learned this from my sister Gretta, who also has an old typewriter collection that I will be sharing with you throughout this month.)

It reads:
My will shall shape my future. Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man’s doing but my own. I am the force; I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze. My choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny. ~ Elaine Maxwell

  1. Wonderful darling typewriter! I learnt to type on a manual typewriter-but it was no cute little lightweight portable! It must have weighed a ton.

  4. I love old typewriters now. Less so when I was first learning to type. They were hard to use!

  5. Welcome to VTT. You have a very good post. I enjoyed the story behind your typewriter. I have used one like it in the past, but doubt I could now. Brought back some old memories.

  9. Ok, now I am feeling vintage too because I learned to type on an old manual typewriter. I wonder if you could find an ink tape for it? Thanks for sharing.

  10. Love the typewriter. I have one too. It is currently a part of the decorations in my husband's office. Since this is "typewriter month" I'll have to share it in the next few weeks!

  12. Thank you all for the comments today! I feel so privileged to have heard from all of you!! I learned on a manual typewriter too! The teacher painted the keys black and would come around and cut our finger nails off because long finger nails were impractical! Oh, the good old days! I hope you come again for more typewriter love!

  13. I love those old typewriters! I saw one at a garage sale for $5 several years ago, and it's bothered me ever since that I didn't buy it. They just add so much character to any room. Ah well, maybe I'll come across another one some day!
    Happy VTT!

P.S. I like the sentiment that you typed up and put in there!

  14. That's a really clever idea- using your computer and printer to type something out since the typewriter itself doesn't work anymore. I never would have thought of that! And what a great deal at $10!

  18. What a wonderful post....I just love your typewriter. I can remember as a girl, my dad had one, it was a greenish color I think, and heavy as lead. Who knows what happened to that, but I sure wish I had it now! What a fantastic price, I would have snatched that up in a heartbeat! Happy VTT!
