This little Royal manual typewriter was found at a local thrift shop for $18. It features a 3 color ribbon, which for the time, was considered very high tech. With a flip of a switch you could type in red or black and in the middle of the ribbon is a strip of White Out. That flaky white correction ribbon. All you had to do was backspace, switch to white ribbon and type the mistyped letter again and TA DA... it was magically gone.
This one weighs a good 15 lbs and comes with a cute little case. My kids love to play with it, so I have it placed on top of my UGLY (found in an alley for FREE) 4 drawer file cabinet, so they can't reach. I do on occasion bring it down to the desk and let them type away. It is fun to see them try to type on it, especially my teenagers.
I learned to type on an old Royal Manual, older than this one. My typing teacher had all of the keys filed and painted black so you had to type from memory alone. She also use to come around and cut your fingernails, if she thought they were too long for typing. Oh, the good old days, huh?

oh I love that typewriter. It's fabulous. It takes some strong hands to really type at decent clip on those beauties. But they make such a lovely sound when they are going. They remind me of my mom who was a secretary.
ReplyDeleteOh and I love the look of the file cabinets the beauty is sitting on. Industrial shabby chic. nifty find too, and can't beat free. nothing ugly about em.
Thanks for sharing.

The typewriter and filing cabinet are both very cool. Reminds me of days gone by when I learned to type on a manual typewriter in high school.
ReplyDeleteI learned on electric, my mom on manual. When she first touched a computer keyboard she couldn't believe how easy it is!

This reminds me of one my dad had, it was heavy as lead to me as a kid, and I loved to play with it, (when he was not home) This really was a reminder of that old typewriter and him...thanks for linking in with VTT!
