My Challenge Room:
Tangerine Tom Boy Room
I started my research for Sophie's room on Pinterest. Check out the board I created for it HERE. These are a few beds that I thought would work:
I wish Sophie liked these little girly touches. Those drawers are so scalloped and sweet.
This is more like what we will end up with, I imagine.
This one was Sophie's FAVORITE. Not even a joke, she really wants this bed. :)
The bed has been a source of contention. As I mentioned before, her room is only 75 inches wide, so in order to maximize space, we decided to build a platform bed with drawers for storage. Last summer I purchased an oak captains bed with head and foot board for only $50 off of Craig's List. But discovered it took up too much space in the room. One part of the bed that did fit in the room was the bank of drawers that were meant to be placed under it.
We used this as the base for the platform bed, Joe added a 2 x 4 to the back wall the same height as the drawers (screwed it into the studs with 3 inch screws) and added a piece of 3/4 plywood on top.
I am painting the drawers and eventually the entire bed white. These 2 drawers go on the left side. I took my time and did several thin coats of paint allowing it to dry completely in between coats; this is a kids bed after all and it will see alot of abuse. I will either coat it with wax or a poly. just to insure the paint lasts.
This is what we ended up with. It only takes up 39 inches of the 110 inch over all length of the room. So she will still have floor space to play on. {Did you notice the paint color?? I painted this room twice last week. Orange, which was more of a 80s peach mixed with brown (YUCK!) and now light Aqua.}
The bed is now solid and sturdy. Sophie thinks it's a stage.
Check out Joe's design touch above. This section on the right was meant to hold one large drawer but we discovered it was broken beyond repair. I thought we would leave it open for toy storage. He crawled in here with a jig saw and cut out this opening which leads to the space behind the drawers. He even trimmed it with molding. It's 75 inches wide by about 2 feet. The perfect hiding spot. As you can tell, she all ready has toys in there. We found a few touch lights that we mounted to the wall inside with the help of our teenage son.
I hope you will come back next Wednesday to see the progress on my Tangerine Tom Boy Room.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'm new to your blog. I'm excited to see how your room challenge will turn out. I'm loving that aqua wall and the bed looks great so far.
Thanks Tiffany! I hopped over and followed your blog. I am having so much fun with this project.
DeleteThat is the best use of every inch! Joe did a fantastic job...oh that secret hiding place should make any girl happy! I am glad you are happy with the color now. I did not know that many light coats of paint hold up better, makes sence.
ReplyDeletegreat idea! you have to get creative in small spaces. can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteThe bed is looking great and I loooove the aqua. It's such a pain to paint a room twice, but I think it's better than living with the wrong color. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteThe paint color you chose is beautiful! I'm looking forward to watching the progress!
ReplyDeleteIt's looking good! Every girl needs a stage..even if its just for a little while:) Looking forward to next weeks update
ReplyDeleteWith three girls in my house there has been many a debate about what they want and what I would like them to have in a bedroom. Good for you in making her dreams come true!! I love the aqua! and your husband did a great job on the bed!!
ReplyDeleteThe bed looks great and I love that hiding spot! Every little girl needs their own hiding spot and how great that you all co-operated on creating it!
ReplyDeleteNot sure why it only shows the first letter of my name with the above comment! Oh well :)
ReplyDeletethat's odd :)
DeleteThose beds look so good so far. Your husband did a great job and I am looking forward for your new projects coming.
ReplyDeleteGood job on the bed! It looks sturdy but looks a little hard. You might want to put several layers of comforter there. One of the best natural sleep aids is a comfortable bed.
ReplyDeleteThose are great bed designs. Some of them doesn't even look like a bed, like the UFC bed, which is definitely my favorite!
