Week 3 of the One Room Challenge
Tangerine Tom Boy Room
Challenges, challenges... this tiny room has given me a lot of challenges. Between the wall color, the fact that no manufactured bed would fit (details HERE) and my latest challenge? Privacy. My 6 year old wants privacy. She wants a, "real door."
This arched doorway adds to the character and charm of our home, right? But how do you install a door here? When Sophie was a baby, we installed this half door mainly for safety. The stairs are directly outside her door. (Yes. That's chalk all over her door, one of the hazards of having a chalk wall in the 'kids zone'.) Joe says we could take out the archway and install an conventional door, but where's the fun in that? Plus I love this archway, I don't want to destroy it.
So here's what I am thinking... install a sliding door that slides out over the stairs (where pendents are above) when opened, when closed it will cover the doorway on the outside. Easier said than done, but that's my plan. Shopping begin this weekend. Here is an example below....
Probably not this color, but you get the idea... I don't think we will find this ultra cool hardware. I am expecting that on my limited budget, we will end up using sliding closet door hardware and hiding it behind wood trim. Who knows? That's the fun part, really... making it up as we go along.
As far as actual progress on the room this week... uh, besides planning and touching up the Aqua paint, taping for a tangerine stripe that will be in the middle of the blue walls, I got nothing done.
Next week, the paint will be revealed and some sort of door will be determined and furniture will be placed... hoping for a productive weekend.

That door looks seriously hard to do. Have you thought of cutting a solid wood door in the shape of the arch? Are there salvage places near you? I can't even figure out how you are going to hang this thing. I think your husband is super handy? The half door is cute!
ReplyDeleteIt may be difficult to find what I am looking for, I will keep the cutting of a solid door in mind when I'm shopping. Thanks for your ideas!
DeleteI was thinking about this last night, and I thought, what about something like this http://tinyurl.com/7326qhf
DeleteObviously, in your colors, etc.
I agree.. try to shape a door to fit in there seems easier than the barn door. But the barn door would look very cool! Good luck with your hunt!
ReplyDeleteI love the barn door idea. How does it stay closed though? I mean it slides...is there a lock or something?
ReplyDeleteI think that door idea is brilliant-I think you can make it work! Looking forward to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea!! The barn door slider hardware is available, I know I've seen it. And I have bought doors like this from salvage places. So long as its not too heavy, and you are obviously handy...you guys can do it!!
ReplyDeleteThe sliding door is an AMAZING solution. While I was reading your post I was in total suspense - I had NO idea how you could figure out a door solution. Bravo, you nailed it. I can't wait to see how it turns out :)
ReplyDeleteSomehow i missed this post the other day, Danylle. I love the idea of the barn door - hope you find the hardware you need!
ReplyDeleteThe sliding door will be amazing. Can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteI love the barn doors! I did the same thing separating my sunroom from the rest of the house. You can buy "barn door hardware" on the internet. Also, I couldn't find a door I wanted, so ended up with a home depot door that I just painted! Make certain to get door "stops" that go on the wall at the bottom which helps hold the door down and not swing!
